Overview

Considering the success of ednet’s audio network, it’s no wonder that our affiliates have been clamoring for us to offer video networking services. Perhaps it’s because a major diva’s producer wants to watch her sing in the booth 3,000 miles away and provide input face-to-face. Or it could be that the series in production in Australia needs to get dailies to the post house in Toronto more quickly than the 3 days it would take ‘overnight’ delivery services to get the tapes there. Either way, we’ve developed solutions to cover you.

Utilizing the same basic concepts as our audio network, we’ll provide you with a video codec to digitize and compress video and audio signals and transmit them via either multiple ISDN data calls or even higher speed Internet connection. Going the ISDN route provides a live, realtime connection of videoconferencing quality and is suitable for studio to studio communications links in tandem with our high quality audio codecs or for long distance presentations and training. As with our audio network, by becoming an ednet affiliate we’ll take care of provisioning your circuits, marketing your site on our website and to our other affiliates, and providing personal installation assistance and ongoing 7/24 tech support.

For production professionals, our new ClipMail Pro product is destined to change the way you work. Designed from the ground up as a professional video product, the ClipMail Pro is a standalone device that encodes your video and audio using the MPEG-2 standard [as used for DVD] and lets you send the resulting clip to any other ClipMail around the world for layback to tape. Send an hour of dailies over 10,000 miles in near real-time, or send a finished commercial to the agency for approval and have your answer within minutes. ClipMail Pro allows you to playback the clips on any desktop computer with a DVD drive or MPEG-2 decoder card. The ClipMail Pro uses the Internet [or any TCP/IP network] for transmission — ednet has partnered with SAVVIS Communications to offer high speed Internet access. We’ll provide the same level of soup-to-nuts support that we’ve become known for throughout the entertainment industry.

To stream or not to stream?… there is no question!

The average size of a 30-second TV commercial is 50 megabytes and can be transmitted over the Internet using ClipMail Pro with an ednet T-1 connection in approximately 10 minutes. That same commercial transferred onto a videocassette and sent by traditional means of over night delivery will arrive in approximately 16 hours.

First consistent use of the Internet for sending dailies for a TV show: BEASTMASTER... streaming from Australia to Toronto and Los Angeles.

First use of the Internet for sending dailies for a feature film: X-MAN... streaming from Australia to Toronto and Los Angeles.
