How long has ednet been in business?

ednet has been in service since June 1992 and has over 500 sites on its ISDN Audio Network alone!

What is this ISDN Audio that ednet provides?

ednet provides equipment called codecs to allow studios, broadcasters and talent to send and receive high-fidelity production-quality audio (and video) over special digital telephone lines.

Is that the Internet?

No. These connections do not use the public Internet. Instead, the audio travels over direct, secure, reliable ISDN digital data calls. These are 2-way, real-time connections that allow very high fidelity communications between cities or across oceans. It's like a "long distance extension cord" for your audio content.

What is a codec?

The word codec is a combination of the term’s encoder and decoder. This is the piece of equipment that sends and receives the high fidelity audio. It interfaces with the ISDN equipment (sometimes call the Terminal Adapter or TA).

What is ISDN Video?

ednet has several products and services for sending video over ISDN. See the video section of this site to learn more.

How soon can I get connected?

Typically, in less than a month. Call us with your requirements.

Where does ednet go?

ednet currently has members in 42 states of the USA, 6 Canadian provinces, 30 Countries around the world, and is growing every month. ednet has nearly 500 domestic and international Affiliates and Associates to connect with. To get specific recommendations for studios in a particular city, you can check our on-line directory under the affiliate section of this site, or you may call our scheduling desk at 1.800.93.ednet.

General FAQs

Are all of ednet's audio codecs compatible with each other?

Yes and no, each codec type is capable of direct connections with similar types, based on commonality of compression standard. But some codec types are unable to dial direct to other brands. However, all ednet codecs can be interconnected or "EDlinked" (bridged, linked, digitally transcoded) to each other or to other codecs (i.e. Dolby, Telos Zephyr, APTx, Musicam CDQ2000 or Prima) through ednet's Network Operating Center in San Francisco.

What does it cost to purchase the various products?

For advice on how to choose an appropriate codec for your application contact ednet at 800-933-3638 with your specific needs for an immediate quote.

Can I arrange a lease/purchase of the codecs rather than paying cash?

Yes. ednet can arrange a third party leasing program with any of our many leasing partners. Of course, we can also work with your own leasing associates.

Are there other people from whom I can purchase this same equipment?

Yes. While you may receive solicitations from another equipment dealer, we believe that there are advantages in acquiring your equipment from someone with whom you may wish to have an ongoing network affiliation and whom you know has knowledgeable 24x7 technical support.

Can the any of your products be purchased directly from the manufacturer?

Most of our products cannot be purchased directly from the manufacture. We work very closely with all of the manufacturers and they are well acquainted with the long-term advantages of affiliation with a network. When you purchase through ednet you actually have both the product manufacturer and ednet behind you!

Why should I be "edneting"?

Being on the "The ednet" provides the following advantages:

  • All installation issues as well as ongoing service problems with your local exchange carrier are handled by ednet's experienced telecommunications staff.
  • 24 Hour access for technical engineering and scheduling support.
  • EDlink (network bridge) connection at lower costs to sites on all our networks:
    • apt-X/128-384
    • MPEG/128 (Musicam Prima & CDQ2000, Telos Zephyr)
    • DolbyFax (Dolby AC-2 & AC-3)
    • Off-network sites utilizing any of the above or CDQ-1000 or G.722 codecs.
  • National and international promotion of the Network and each of it's affiliates.
  • Internet services for downloading of new site information, telephone changes and network news.

Wouldn't it cost much more to be on a managed network such as ednet?

No . . . except for a few pennies per minute on actual usage.

Our monthly network connection charge is equivalent to a direct pass-through of ISDN charges, the monthly connection costs you would incur anyway.

Where does ednet make its money if they are passing direct costs for installation, monthly connection costs and only a few cents per minute over what I would normally pay?

Volume. To cover the costs of maintaining a managed network, ednet makes its profit from its arrangements to purchase long distance services at wholesale rates due to the volume it purchases.

Do we need to join the ednet Network in order to purchase any of the products ednet sells?

No, that is not a pre-requisite. Anyone may purchase products from ednet.

If I have already purchased equipment, is there any way I can now join the ednet network?

Yes. You can become an ednet AFFILIATE by ordering ISDN service from us or transferring the ownership (and thus the responsibility) of your telecommunications lines to ednet. ednet will add your studio information to its electronic database and announce your affiliation to each of its other AFFILIATE studios, unless you choose to remain "unlisted".

Should you desire, ednet also offers a Network ASSOCIATE program, where you retain ownership and responsibility for your own lines, but will be listed in ednet's database of studios. This enables ednet staff to recommend your studio for various projects when producers approach them for studio referrals. Go to the AFFILIATE section of this site for more information on the program.

Will we be billed on a monthly basis?

Yes. ednet will bill monthly from our telephone bill data. Our unique billing format gives you a clear picture of which studio you dialed, and for how long.

How will other studios know where to find us if we join ednet?

ednet updates its online directory continuously, listing all facilities that have become a part of the ednet service. The directory shows studio name, scheduling contact, and direct-dial numbers for network access, and is available to Affiliates through this web site.
